Motion for Annual General Meeting

Motion Title: Transition to a Charitable Organization

Moved by: F. Howes

Seconded by: M. Dix

Whereas:

  1. The Vancouver Short Film Festival has been a prominent platform for showcasing and promoting short films, fostering creativity, and supporting filmmakers in the local and national community.

  2. As a non-profit organization, the festival has achieved significant milestones and contributed to the cultural landscape of Vancouver.

  3. Transitioning to a charitable organization will enhance our ability to secure funding, attract donors, and expand our impact in the community.

Be it Resolved:

  1. The Vancouver Short Film Festival will take the necessary steps to become a registered charitable organization under the Income Tax Act of Canada.

  2. The Board of Directors is authorized to undertake all legal and administrative actions required to facilitate this transition, including but not limited to, amending the organization's bylaws, applying for charitable status with the Canada Revenue Agency, and ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations.

  3. The Board of Directors will provide a report on the progress and implications of this transition at the next AGM, including any changes to the organization's governance structure and operational practices.

  4. This resolution will be effective immediately upon its adoption at this AGM.

Reason for the Motion:

By becoming a charitable organization, the Vancouver Short Film Festival will be better positioned to:

  • Attract tax-deductible donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations.

  • Increase our funding opportunities and enhance financial sustainability.

  • Expand our educational and community outreach programs, benefiting a wider audience and aspiring filmmakers.

  • Strengthen our partnerships with other charitable organizations and cultural institutions.

This transition will allow us to continue our mission of promoting the art of filmmaking while providing greater support to our community and enhancing our impact on the cultural scene in Vancouver and beyond.
