BC's Best Shorts

VSFF 2012 Submission Guidelines

Read this before you click on the submission links below. Seriously!

  • Submissions must be RECEIVED by 6:00 PM on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at the latest. Films received after this time will NOT be eligible for screening.
  • Films must be submitted with a $25 CAD submission fee (individual students), $35 CAD submission fee (professional artists), or $100 CAD submission fee (5 student bundle). We accept cash or cheque via mail, or PayPal online.

  • Students: You must be a current student at a school in British Columbia and have made your film before graduating. For student bundles, all five films must have been made at the same school. We are now accepting entries from high school students.
  • Professional artists: You must be currently working in BC with a body of work in short film, video, or new media. All selected films at the professional level will be given an artist fee after the festival.
  • Films must have been completed in 2010 or later.  The film must have been produced in BC or made by a BC producer or director.
  • There is no time limit to films, but be aware that we have rarely screened films over 15 minutes, including credits.  We will accept web series episodes up to 15 minutes (including credits) as a single entry.
  • Selected filmmakers will be notified by email around mid-September 2012.
  • All submissions to The Vancouver Short Film Festival Society (VSFF) must be original works and/or have all necessary permissions to the material contained in the film, including but not limited to: all music, artwork, clips, and all depictions of persons. When dealing with your submission VSFF relies on the fact that you are the creator of the film and that you have received permission to use all material within the film. Do not submit a film that contains material you do not have the right to use.
  • VSFF may use clips and images from your film for promotional purposes, including print, radio, television, Internet, and other media.
  • In the past, the winner of our Best Short Film Award has received a rescreening on other broadcast media. As such, the VSFF may forward copies of your film on your behalf.  If you would NOT like your film to be rescreened after screening at our festival you must let us know, and we will forward the prize to another recipient.
  • When submitting your film to multiple festivals, please be aware of other events that screen after the VSFF, that require Canadian films to be premieres. In the case that you are accepted into another festival that takes place after the VSFF, you may contact us to withdraw your film and receive a refund. If you do not contact us, we will screen the accepted film as planned.
